Maintenance
Helle knives are designed to retain their sharpness as a lifelong outdoors companion. But it is still important to take care of your knife and its sheath.

  • The Handle. Dry the handle with a soft cloth if wet and wax occasionally.
  • The Sheath. The leather needs to be impregnated occasionally with colourless impregnation agent (grease or wax) to keep supple. Dry the sheath carefully in room temperature if it becomes wet
  • The Blade. Wipe the blade with a soft cloth if wet and treat with grease occasionally.

Sharpening
Use a diamond tool or a wet stone for sharpening. Place the knife bevel flat to the sharpening tool and work the entire blade. Work one side until you can feel a slight burr on the opposite side. Switch side and repeat the procedure until you feel the burr on the first side. You have now established an edge.

Remove the burr by stroking the blade gently over the sharpening surface on both sides, as if cutting very thin slices. Keep the bevel flat towards the sharpener and move from side to side until the burr is gone.

Helle Gaupe Knife

HELLE IS A NORWEGIAN COMPANY WITH THEIR FACTORY LOCATED IN HOLANADAL. ALL OF THEIR KNIVES ARE MADE IN THIS FACTORY. HELLE HAS PRODUCED HIGH QUALITY KNIVES SINCE 1932 AND THAT PROVIDES A LOT OF EXPERIENCE. EACH KNIFE IS MADE FOR A PARTICULAR TASK OR PURPOSE AND THE GAUPE IS LISTED AS "AN ALL PURPOSE OUTDOOR KNIFE". IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PARTICULAR TYPE OF KNIFE, EG "HUNTING", GO TO THEIR WEBSITE AND DO A RELEVANT SEARCH. ( PLEASE NOTE THAT AMAZON OFTEN COMBINES KNIFE TYPES, EG HUNTING & OUTDOOR, SO DO NOT RELY ON AMAZON). MY KNIFE ARRIVED IN A CYLINDER SHAPED CONTAINER, MUCH LIKE A SMALL BOTTLE OF VERY GOOD SCOTCH. INSIDE WERE THE KNIFE, A SHEATH, A POLISHING CLOTH (A THOUGHTFUL BONUS) AND A SMALL BOOKLET PROVIDING A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COMPANY AND THEIR PRODUCTS. THE GAUPE IS ABOUT 9" LONG WITH A FINELY SANDED AND WAXED HANDLE MADE OF CURLY BIRCH. THE SHEATH IS MADE OF GOOD LEATHER AND HAS THE COMPANY'S LOGO A LYNX FOOTPRINT EMBOSSED ON IT. THE BLADE IS A LITTLE OVER 4" AND IS MADE OF TRIPLE LAMINATED STAINLESS STEEL. HELLE EXPLAINS THAT THE TRIPLE LAMINATION PROCESS, UNIQUE TO THEM, IS DONE TO EXPLOIT THE QUALITIES OF HIGH CARBON STEEL (1095), WHICH IS THE CORE AND PROVIDES THE VERY SHARP EDGE, WITH ADDITIONAL 2 LAYERS OF STAINLESS STEEL TO PROTECT THE KNIFE FROM BREAKAGE AND RUST. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT HIGH CARBON STEEL CAN BE RELATIVELY BRITTLE AND IS PRONE TO RUST. MY KNIFE CUT EASILY AND FLAWLESSLY THROUGH A SINGLE PIECE OF PAPER. OVERALL THIS IS A VERY WELL MADE AND ATTRACTIVE KNIFE THAT SHOULD PROVIDE GENERATIONS OF USE.
