Gransfors Large Splitting Axe 442 w/ Collar Guard

The Gränsfors Large Splitting Axe can be used for splitting all types of firewood. It is forged and ground to a concave, quite thin blade at the bit. The axe cuts quickly and easily into the wood and then effectively splits it as the broader section pushes apart the wood. The handle has a protective steel collar below the axe head and circular grooves towards the end for an extra firm grip. The handle is available in two forms, a shorter and a longer version. Splitting Axes should not be used for striking a wedge or as a wedge. Only the Splitting Maul is designed for this.

Each Gransfors Axe head is hand-forged from high quality Swedish steel that is honed, tempered & annealed to the perfect hardness by the experienced Gränfors Bruk Swedish Smiths who stamp their initials on the head. Each Gransfors axe is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece you'll treasure for years to come.

I try not to go through the stack of rounds too fast

Before the Gransfors, cutting wood was a chore and a frequently resulted in flying or buried axe heads. Now, I not only look forward to splitting wood, It has become my pastime. I try not to go through the stack of rounds too fast so I don't use up all the fun in one day. I am serious-this thing is fun! No matter how big or small the round, the Gransfors will do the job - it may take a few more wacks but the head is light and it never gets buried. My only problem now is where to put all the wood.

Mix of heart and sapwoods. Also, a bit short.

It splits wood fairly effectively, but I still find I have to go to the sledge and wedge fairly frequently.
the more I use it the more I like it. I still think this would be a better product with a longer handle - with a bit of a curve. Also, I don't know if it is a completely an urban legend about mixing heart and sapwood, but it does look awkward. The grain was excellent though.
