The Gränsfors Large Carving Axe is used for woodworking and shaping wood. The axe has been developed in collaboration with master craftsmen Wille Sundqvist and Onni Linnanheimo, with inspiration from old designs. The Large Carving Axe has a relatively long, curved cutting edge which is double-sided as standard. The axe is also available as a special order with the edge ground specifically for right-handed or left-handed carving.

The Large Carving Axe, Grinded left side, has a short bevel face on the right side of the edge, if the axe is held in the right hand with the handle down and head up. The left side of the edge has a longer, slightly concave bevel face, which provides excellent support when carving.

The Large Carving Axe, Grinded right side, has a short bevel face on the left side of the edge, if the axe is held in the left hand with the handle down and head up. The right side of the edge has a longer, slightly concave bevel face, which provides excellent support when carving.

Right-handed persons normally use Large Carving Axe, Grinded left side, and Left-handed persons normally use Large Carving Axe, Grinded right side, while the longer slightly concave bevel face come near the wood and therefore provides excellent support when carving.

The handle has an uneven surface, giving good friction for a firm grip. The axe is also available as a special order with a carved handle, giving even better grip and control.

As with all of Gransfors products, it is of excellent quality; hand-forged and made using traditional Swedish methods. Each axe head comes individually stamped with the smith's initials, while the hickory handle is boiled in linseed oil and rolled in bees wax for a smooth water repellant finish.

Each Gransfors Axe head is hand-forged from high quality Swedish steel that is honed, tempered & annealed to the perfect hardness by the experienced Gränfors Bruk Swedish Smiths who stamp their initials on the head. Each Gransfors axe is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece you'll treasure for years to come.

Should be better for the price!!

After a fair bit of work this is now a good axe. I was really disappointed with it when I first got it, but now after reworking the handle and doing some work on the head it has become an often used axe for my carving work.

If you do not mind doing some file work on the head and fixing or replacing the handle you will end up with a good axe that will likely last you a lifetime. I have left my original review unedited but have upped my rating from two to four stars as I have grown fond of this axe. I just still think that the quality control needs to be better for the money, which is why I can only give it four stars.

Well worth the big bucks

Love it. I've been carving wooden spoons for two years, this tool makes it so much easier to quickly carve out the rough shape. I wish I had bought it when I first started. It arrived sharp enough to shave hair off my arm.

Like butter

I've used dozens of axes and hatchets in my life, cutting firewood and carving. Some were good some were bad, most were so-so. I really didn't think the Gransfors could be all that different to be worth the price. I was wrong. I've now used it to carve greenwood spoons and OLD, Hard Cherry and Apple it worked one as easy as the other. Really noticed the difference when I switched from axe to knife in the hardwoods.
5 thumbs up from me.
