The Gransfors Broad Axe model 1900 has a traditional design and is suitable for squaring logs and planks, for example when building a log house. Broad Axes vary greatly depending on the shape of the head and edge and the angle of the handle. If holding the axe on your hand with the head up, looking from the back, cutting edge away from you the sharpen bevel is on both sides.

There are two designs in terms of the head and edge. By far the most common is for the axe blade to be centered in relation to the head and eye. A special-order version is also available, where the axe blade is slightly angled in relation to the head, allowing the axe to glide along the log, without its eye catching on the log.

The Broad Axe has three grind options. As a rule, the Broad Axe is ground on both sides of the edge (knife grind). The double-sided Broad Axe is often used for making joints, but also for all sorts of timber and plank hewing. The axe is also available as a special order ground only on one side (scissor grind). On a scissor-ground axe, the side of the head that does not have a ground bevel face is generally flat and on the right-hand side of the edge. The left-hand side of the edge is the ground side. The flat side of the axe is more ‘aggressive’ and is used when the log has to be really smooth, for example when planing structural timbers. The other side is used when the log is to have a slight wave pattern and thus does not need to be as smooth. The reverse scissor grind is also available as the exact opposite of the scissor grind.

The Broad Axe has three options for the angle of the handle. The Broad Axe handle is attached straight as standard, with the blade parallel to the handle. However, the axe can also be ordered with the blade angled to the right (right-angled) or to the left (left-angled). With an angled handle, the handle and your hands remain at a distance from the timber, thereby minimising the risk of personal injury.

As with all of Gransfors products, it is of excellent quality; hand-forged and made using traditional Swedish methods. Each axe head comes individually stamped with the smith's initials, while the hickory handle is boiled in linseed oil and rolled in bees wax for a smooth water repellant finish.

The Gransfors Bruk Broad Axe 1900 Straight 4801 has a handle ‘eye’ in a straight line with blade (not offset), and beveled on two sides (double sided sharpened) with the ‘eye’ (where the handle attaches), and the handle in a straight line with the axe head…this is considered a chopping broadaxe…although it can also be used for hewing. Good all purpose…most common…(although Scotty has several broadaxes and none of them are double sided sharpened).

Each Gransfors Axe head is hand-forged from high quality Swedish steel that is honed, tempered & annealed to the perfect hardness by the experienced Gränfors Bruk Swedish Smiths who stamp their initials on the head. Each Gransfors axe is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece you'll treasure for years to come.

Gransfors Bruk Broad Axe 1900 Straight 4801

Great Tool

When used for its intended purpose this thing is awesome. It likes working at full power; I tried using it to hew down some hickory into a small axe handle. Preventing over-penetration was difficult and very fatiguing.

Slicing into green, freshly fallen wood with the short handle/heavy head combo is a powerful, accurate and quick operation. It’s over too quickly.

For regular chopping/splitting work I’d give it a B- because it gets stuck pretty easily.

All physical aspects of the axe are perfect.

Best hewing axe on the market

If you want to try your hand at building a traditional log building and do it without using a chainsaw to cut the joints you will need a tool like this. Gransfors Bruks makes some of the best axes in the world - they are easy to sharpen - and the handles are properly oiled and waxed, no varnish. Even the grain in the handles is running in the right direction. This is a high quality tool.
