Fallkniven NL5 Northern Light Idun 4" VG10 Knife

The Fallkniven NL5 is a an excellent choice as a outdoor and hunting knife. The straight, fairly generous grip in leather gives complete control over the powerful blade in laminate VG10 steel, and makes the knife a tool as attractive as it is effective in the hands of the experienced hunter.

In Norse mythology, Idun was the goddess of fertility, and responsible for guarding the apples that ensured the gods eternal youth. To many, she was also a symbol of love and rebirth, and in a poem she was referred to as the lover of the gods (ása leika).

Fallkniven NL5 has an aminated VG10 steel, where the edge is made of renowned VG10 steel and the sides consist of tough, all-stainless 420J2 steel. This combination is unquestionably the best, since it brings together all conceivable and desirable properties such as resilience, resistance to torque and edge-durability in a single blade. With laminate technology one can expect an additional 20% strength in the form of resistance to bending, as compared to an ordinary VG10 blade. This ensures qualities that no other manufacturer in the world can offer.

Not quite perfect

The knives I've bought in the recent past have been either from fairly well known custom shops such as Randall or individual smiths such as Wayne Hendrix. So my expectations for this knife were high. Supposedly the Northern Lights series is close to Fallkniven's best, and I wasn't disappointed. Much.

Typically I'll treat a stacked leather handle and leather sheath with a light application of Brooks Proofide, this worked well on the fairly dry leather. A certain amount of gummy material on the guard did not resist the sparing application of Flitz polish.

The sheath, by the way, was black not brown, but I actually like it better as it sets off the handle well.

I didn't observe any flaws or irregularities in the blade lamination or on the edge. The blade junction to the guard could be better, this should be soldered. Overall I find this to be a very well executed design which I suspect I will be happy to own over time. Quibbles are decidedly minor. I would be happier with a decently sized choil and a thumb notch on the top, but I guess I can't have it all.

On the plus side, the handle is well shaped and of decent size. The sheath is well executed and solid (albeit with a rather small belt loop).

I wouldn't compare the Idun to a custom or handmade knife, but it comes very close.

I like it.

One of the finest knives out there!

I have received this knife and got the chance to test it out. The 4" VG10 blade is 20% stronger than it's counterparts. The sharpness right out of the box is fantastic. Great size and feel when you hold it in your hand. Excellent griping without any hot spots while using it. Looks like it's going to be an heirloom for sure. Mine also came with a very well made "Black" sheath. But it makes it look better in contrast to the handle when mounted. Secured with no wobbling around.
A Great knife all the way around.
