The Hults Bruk Gran is a small splitting axe intended for lighter duties such as the basic splitting involved with making fireplace wood.

This item has an axe head weight of 2 Lbs and a handle length of 20 inches. The head is the product of blasted and clear-lacquered ironwork and the curved shaft is made of US-sourced hickory. That handle is treated with linseed oil.

  • This axe head is hand-forged and made from Swedish axe steel in a foundry that has been in operation since 1697.
  • As part of the production process, the steel is struck multiple times thereby increasing its density and resulting in more durability of the axe.
  • The head is constructed in such a way that there is a tempered zone designed to hold a very sharp edge even after many sharpenings.
  • Each axe comes with a traditional leather protective sheath that is embellished with some unique Swedish decorative elements. The axe is shipped in its own storage box and comes with a detailed users manual.

If I could have only one axe, this would be it.

I have eight other axes, including Gransfors, Helko, another Hults Bruk, and others. This is now my favorite of them all. In terms of splitting, it does an excellent job. With a solid strike, rounds practically explode away from the blade. The slender wedge design is very efficient. The relatively short handle length means I can use it to further process smaller sections without a long handle getting in the way, but it's still enough length for reasonably large rounds. Granted, if I have rounds that are 24"+ I'm likely breaking out my splitting maul, but this one gets the job done for large jobs better than you might think. The quality is top notch.

Love it, but the handle near the blade is splintery

Fairly decent quality

This is the lower level Hults Bruks splitting axe. Handle quality is good, finish is decent. Not overly impressive. Split one 50 foot pine for firewood. Struggled a little bit with Knotty sections. Nice size to keep in camp box

Perfect size for most people's home use

Perfect size for breaking down fireplace sized wood to smaller pieces to get the fire going. I even use it indoors. Great for camp. Probably not great for splitting large logs (there's a larger size for that).
